Who Did Anna Stanley Marry? What happened Between them?
Anna and Charles were married for almost four decades and enjoyed a contented and fulfilling life together. Despite this, after a few decades of being together, they started having marital disagreements, ultimately leading to their union’s end.
The move to Atlanta marked the beginning of all of this. Because Charles was so pre-occupied with his work in the ministry, he began to ignore his family. Anna had feelings of hurt and rejection.
Because of this, she decided to leave them and their home and cease attending the church her husband attended. It was strange to think that a pastor’s wife wouldn’t attend church on Sundays. Despite the numerous problems, Anna and Charles were adamantly opposed to getting a divorce, and neither of them was willing to be the one to make the first move.
Anna requested separate maintenance in 1993, which was a complete surprise to everyone involved. Even before Anna ended the marriage this way, the relationship had been failing for a long time. The news of their separation was not well received in the circles that Southern Baptists frequent.
According to the teachings of the Bible regarding divorce, Southern Baptists believe that divorce should be avoided at all costs. They tried everything in their power to get back together, including going to marriage counseling with licensed counselors and medical professionals, but it was to no avail.
In March 1995, Anna felt compelled to file for a divorce or formal separation.
This time, she explained the grounds for the divorce in a letter that she composed and sent to the church that her ex-husband attends. Anna revealed that she and her husband had been going through a difficult time in their marriage and a series of depressing disappointments for several years.
Their divorce was finalized on February 16, 2000, after a drawn-out and uphill legal battle that lasted until that date.
Even though Stanley had planned to step down after the divorce was finalized, his church congregation voted overwhelmingly to keep him on as their pastor on the condition that he does not get remarried in the future. In defiance of the requests of some members of the clergy, he persisted in his ministry and refused to step away to get his personal life in order.
After the divorce, he did not remarry anybody else. Instead, he occupied his time by writing books and volunteering in various capacities at his local church.
In 2020, when Charles finally decided that he had reached a point in his life where it was appropriate for him to stand down from his position as senior pastor at First Baptist Church, he did so.
