You are leaving in twenty minutes and neither of you has a costume. This is the list for that.

Every pair here is assembled from clothes that are already in the house, plus at most one thing you can grab on the way. No cutting, no gluing, nothing that needs to dry.

They are ordered by speed. The first few take about five minutes each. The slowest one on the page takes twenty.

The Five Minute Rule

If a costume needs anything you do not already own, it is not a last-minute costume. Work backwards from your own wardrobe instead of from an idea.

Pick something with a strong silhouette. In a dark, crowded room people read shape and colour, not detail, so a bold simple outfit beats a clever intricate one every time.

And give yourselves one prop each. A prop is what tells people this is a costume rather than an outfit, and it is the fastest thing you can add.

1. Holiday Tourists

Loud shirts, shorts, socks pulled up with sandals, sunglasses on your heads and a camera or phone slung round the neck. Sun cream stripe on the nose optional but recommended.

A folded map or a printed boarding pass in hand finishes it. Ask strangers to take your photograph all night and the joke keeps running.

Ready in: 5 minutes. You need: nothing you do not own.

2. Ghost Sheets

Two white sheets, two pairs of scissors, two holes each. It is the oldest costume there is and it still works, particularly for two people.

Wear something with a bit of shape underneath so the sheets hang rather than swamp you, and cut the eye holes generously so you can actually see.

Ready in: 5 minutes. You need: two old sheets you do not mind cutting.

3. Farmer and Scarecrow

Denim, a checked shirt, boots and a straw hat for the farmer. The scarecrow takes the same checked shirt approach with straw or raffia tucked into the cuffs and collar.

Two triangles and a stitched mouth drawn on the scarecrow face is the only makeup needed, and eyeliner does it fine.

Ready in: 10 minutes. You need: a checked shirt each.

4. Netflix and Chill

One of you in a red top with the logo lettering taped or drawn on. The other layers up in a blanket, thick socks and a hot drink permanently in hand.

It is a pun rather than a costume, and it lands immediately. The chill half is also the most comfortable thing anyone will wear all night.

Ready in: 10 minutes. You need: a red top and white paper or tape.

5. Doctor and Patient

A white shirt or coat, a pen in the pocket and a clipboard for the doctor. The patient goes in pyjamas with a bandage wrapped somewhere obvious and an arm in a scarf sling.

Toilet paper makes a convincing bandage from two feet away, which is as close as anyone is looking.

Ready in: 10 minutes. You need: pyjamas and a roll of something white.

6. Vampire Love Story

Both of you in black, one with a collar turned up and fangs, the other pale with two small marks at the neck. A red lip on both ties it together.

If you own anything with a high collar, this is its night. Everything else is makeup you already have in the bathroom.

Ready in: 10 minutes. You need: fangs, if you can find a shop still open.

7. Greaser and Pink Lady

A leather or dark jacket, a white tee, cuffed jeans and hair pushed back. Pink or red on the other side with a neck scarf and a high ponytail.

Sunglasses on both, worn indoors, do more for this costume than any other single detail.

Ready in: 10 minutes. You need: a jacket and anything pink.

8. Bank Robbers

All black, a beanie pulled low, a scarf over the face and a bag over one shoulder. Draw a currency symbol on the bag in marker and you are done.

It is the easiest strong silhouette on the list, and both of you wearing it identically is exactly why it reads from across a room.

Ready in: 5 minutes. You need: black clothes and a bag.

9. Eighties Workout Partners

Bright leggings, a headband, leg warmers if you have them, and an oversized tee with the neck cut wide. Big hair on both.

Neon is the whole costume. If the colours are loud enough, nothing else about it has to be accurate.

Ready in: 10 minutes. You need: anything neon and a headband.

10. Chef and Ingredient

A white shirt, an apron and a folded paper hat for the chef. The other goes head to toe in one strong colour as the ingredient, red for a tomato, green for a pepper.

A wooden spoon in the chef hand and a green scarf at the ingredient collar is all the detail this needs.

Ready in: 15 minutes. You need: an apron and one block colour outfit.

11. Celebrity and Paparazzi

Sunglasses, a coat with the collar up and a confident walk on one side. A camera, a lanyard and a notebook on the other, permanently half a step behind.

The slowest one here only because the celebrity half wants a bit of styling. The performance does the rest of the work.

Ready in: 20 minutes. You need: sunglasses and any camera.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest couple costume on this list?

The bank robbers and the ghost sheets, both about five minutes. The holiday tourists are just as quick if either of you owns a loud shirt.

We own nothing useful. What now?

Bank robbers. Black clothes and a bag is genuinely the entire requirement, and almost every household has both.

How do we make a rushed costume look intentional?

Commit to the silhouette and give each of you one prop. A clipboard, a camera, a wooden spoon. The prop is what turns an outfit into a costume.

Will anyone be able to tell what we are?

Only if you keep it simple. In a dark room people read shape and colour. Every pair on this list was chosen because it survives that test.

The Bottom Line

Last-minute costumes fail when people get ambitious. The ones that work are built from what is already in the wardrobe and carry one clear prop each.

Pick from the top of this list if you are genuinely out of time, and spend whatever minutes you have left on the props rather than the clothes.
